Rural Var - Pretty as a Picture

As visitors wander round the sculpture garden in the warm Var sunshine and admire the paintings by Tessa, on display in the exceptional gallery, Nigel and Tessa were happy to have turned dreams of a new life in France into a reality.

Having purchased a partly built property in the delightful Var village of Seillans, in 2003, they have enjoyed building a successful private gallery business, well complemented by the amazing culture and lifestyle that the village of Seillans inspires.

This is a “village exceptionnel” and proudly exhibits plaques confirming it one of “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France”.

Just forty five minutes from Nice International airport and thirty five from the coast around Cannes mean easy access to a multitude of diversities but, most importantly, an easy retreat to peace and charm at the end of the day.

Seillans has a population of 2500 and stands 365 metres above sea level. It nestles in the hills, vineyards and olive groves: and early records date back to 500 B.C.

It was the home and atelier of Max Ernst, and his wife Dorothea Tanning, for the last twelve years of his life. There is a permanent collection of their lithographs and other artwork on show at the Espace Walberg situated in the charming unspoilt centre of the village – Place du Thouron – where one can also find the useful  Tourist Office and the Gloire de Mon Pere restaurant, in it’s unique setting, beneath the massive plane trees, around the village fountain.

As with all French villages the vision, energy, aspirations – and guardianship - of the local Mayor are crucial and Seillans has been very fortunate in that respect, with their elected choice for the past fourteen years, Rene Ugo.
